This is a shot taken by my brother-in-law during a snowmobiling trip to Bobcaygeon. The original image had a light mist along the ice covered river banks, and was rather dimly lit (early morning shot with a point and shoot camera). I enhanced and built upon the existing mist; brought out details hidden in the shadows; and boosted the colour tone.

You can see how dark the shadows are in the original shot. Some tweaking in photoshop brought out the details. Note the layer of mist running along the edge of the river in the background. This was the inspiration for the work put into this image.

Having a tablet, versus using a mouse or trackball, really pays off when working on this sort of image. The tablet gives you much finer levels of control.
